Custom Invitations 101
by A Bridal Paperie
Have you ever purchased wallpaper? If you have, you already know something
about custom invitations. Both of these products are showcased on wall
displays or in very large, cumbersome books; and, unless you are artistically
inclined, both can be very hard to imagine in their final form. However,
invitations have one negative that wallpaper does not: wallpaper can always
be re-done. In other words - do not try to order invitations without an
expert to guide you.
Whether
your retailer has a home studio, a brick and mortar store, or an internet
website, you will benefit from the expertise of a professional. Most qualified
invitation retailers are artists at heart, and they are paper and print
lovers as well. They will have extensive knowledge of paper attributes
and printing methods. They will be familiar with the wide selection of
invitation manufacturers: they will know which ones are reliable, which
ones are accommodating, and which ones offer a superior product. They
will have etiquette expertise, not only for your invitation needs, but
for all aspects of your wedding that require it. Many retailers offer
envelope addressing, art, calligraphy and mailing services, and they may
provide you with tools to organize your guest list. Finally, by choosing
your retailer wisely, not only will you be guided by an experienced professional,
but you will save money in the long run. Most retailers are more than
willing to satisfy your budget requirements, and they will go out of their
way to make sure you are happy with the end result.
It is, of course, extremely important to find a qualified retailer. Some
manufacturers have their own retail outlets which give you the highest
level of expertise and control (and probably the lowest price). Other
qualified retailers may be found through personal referral, internet blogs,
and website reviews, or better business bureau ratings.
Here are some questions to ask before you commit your time and money:
1. Will you be dealing with a person dedicated solely
to selling invitations? If so, how long has the person been in this business?
Does he/she have an art background?
2. Can you make a specific appointment so you are not
rushed or interrupted? If so, are consultations complimentary? If not,
can the cost be waived if invitations are purchased?
3. How large is the invitation selection? Some stores
cater to a specific clientele. Ideally, your retailer’s selection
should cover all price ranges.
4. Does the retailer seem interested in your thoughts
and ideas? Are you asked about your wedding date, theme or wedding colors
– even before an appointment is made.
5. Does the retailer encourage customization? Does he/she
seem willing to request samples and information from the manufacturer?
If you are dealing directly with a manufacturer’s outlet, a wide
array of materials should be available for customization while you are
at your appointment.
6. Are the invitations discounted? Retailers may discount
20%-30% off retail, or they may offer other incentives. Manufacturers’
outlets usually sell at wholesale (40%-50% off retail).
